Natural edge bowls are Andy‘s favorite works to turn. Leaving the bark on the wood best displays the nature of the piece. There is no doubt the turned vessel was crafted from a tree.
Some unique challenges are presented when attempting to keep the bark on the bowl as it spins on the lathe . Often times the bark has notions of parting ways with the rest of the wood requiring some creative solutions from the wood worker. Turning wood with the edge kept in its natural state allows for a variety of creative possibilities.
This type of bowl gives the illusion that it is not round, but somehow oval shaped. It is round, however, and is only “missing” the areas of wood where the rim goes up and down.
