Andy currently teaches beginning and advanced level bowl turning classes at the Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House location on the beautiful Tantalus hillside.
The entry level class provides students with the basic skills needed to create their own bowl on a Nova lathe. A variety of topics will be covered, including where to get wood and how to select a piece for turning. There will be an in-depth overview of the wide assortment of tools available to today’s turners. The various gouges and cutting techniques will be demonstrated. Students will get a chance to see how great tools can be made from household items as well.
Andy will demonstrate his techniques for turning a basic bowl shape and will then turn students loose on their own lathes where the fun begins. Students will hone their cutting skills with the experienced instructor standing by to guide them as they craft their very own bowl. Those who attend will go home with their masterpiece in hand and plenty of inspiration to keep on turning.

Natural edge bowl turning is an advanced level class that is recommended for turners with some bowl turning experience. Attention will be given to the proper selection of logs suitable for turning a bowl and keeping the bark in place. An emphasis on design will help turners to shape a vessel that will be enjoyed for a lifetime. Natural edge shapes require some creative techniques and imagination that will be addressed throughout the day.
